Elokuvan tarina sijoittuu konservatiiviseen amerikkalaiseen pikkukaupunkiin 1970-luvulla. Vasta 13-vuotias Cecilia Lisbon yrittää tappaa itsensä. Cecilia on yksi viidestä kauniista sisaresta ja itsemurhayrityksen myötä saamme mahdollisuuden tarkastella perheen elämää lähemmin. Sisarusten vanhemmat (James Woods ja Kathleen Turner), yrittävät suojella tyttäriään kaikelta pahalta, mikä ei suinkaan vähennä tyttöjen viehätysvoimaa poikien silmissä. Itsemurhayrityksen jälkeen perhe sulkeutuu omiin oloihinsa ja tytöt kiinnostuvat kuolemasta yhä enemmän ja enemmän.
