Normiryöstö eskaloituu kuitenkin panttivankifarssiksi. Bianca ja Lars ovat eri maailmoista, mutta heidän välilleen päiviä kestävän tilanteen aikana syntyy ainutlaatuinen suhde. Nimitys Tukholma-syndrooma (Tila, jossa panttivanki suhtautuu myötämielisesti kaappaajaansa) sai alkunsa tästä historiallisesta vuoden 1973 pankkiryöstöä seuranneesta panttivankitilanteesta.
