Vihir is a story of two adolescent boys Sameer and Nachiket (cousins, who are best friends) who struggle with their unconventional outlooks on life and family. They write to each other telling each other about their doings and happenings in life. They get to meet after a long time as Sameer with his mother and sister visit Nachiket's village for a family wedding.

Ukko Pesonen asuu pienessä punaisessa mökissä ja hänen päivänsä kuluvat mukavasti halkoja hakatessa, nikkaroidessa, keksintöjä tehdessä ja kanoja hoitaessa. Oikeastaan hänellä on kaikkea, mitä hän voisi elämältään toivoa. Vaikka kyllähän Pesonenkin tuntee joskus olonsa hieman yksinäiseksi. Eräänä päivänä hänen huolehtivainen naapurinsa rouva Anttonen tuo Pesoselle pienen kissanpennun, jotta vanhalla miehellä olisi edes jotain seuraa. Pesonen antaa kissanpojalle nimen Viiru ja kasvattaa sitä hellästi kotonaan. Kun Viiru alkaa yht’äkkiä eräänä päivänä puhua, onnesta tulee täydellistä, ja näistä kahdesta tulee erottamattomat ystävät.

Jouluun on aikaa enää kaksi päivää ja lumimyräkkä peittää Viirun ja Pesosen pihapiirin alleen. Talossa ei ole jouluruokia ja kuusikin puuttuu. Viiru alkaa pelätä, että joulu menee aivan pilalle, mutta Pesonen lupaa katilleen, että joulusta tulee paras ikinä. Kun Pesonen seuraavana päivänä vielä loukkaa jalkansa kuusenhakureissulla, uhkaa Viiru menettää toivonsa. Mutta monien kommellusten kautta ja ystävien avulla joulun taika toteutuu – ja juhlasta tulee paras joulu ikinä.
