Kun arkkitehti Newton Davisin (Steve Martin) rakastettu Becky (Dana Delany) hylkää tämän kosinnan, Newton ottaa sen raskaasti ja alkaa inhota heille rakentamaansa unelmataloa. Eroa surressaan Newton tulee viettäneeksi yön tarjoilijatar Gwenin (Goldie Hawn) kanssa. Tuo yö muuttaa hänen elämänsä, sillä Newtonin kerrottua tarinansa Gwenille tämä päättää muuttaa asumaan tuohon luksuslukaaliin Newtonin kotikylässä. Tomera tyttö asettuukin taloksi ja ryhtyy sisustamaan taloa mieleisekseen. Pirteä ja ystävällinen Gwen hurmaa kaikki ja saa koko kylän uskomaan. Newtonin vanhemmat mukaan luettuina olevansa tämän uusi vaimo. Gwen ystävystyy myös Beckyn kanssa, ja Gwenin avulla Becky löytääkin Newtonista aivan uusia puolia.
