Hänen naapurissaan asuu Rusty "drag - queen", joka on täydellinen vastakohta kaikelle mihin Walt itse uskoo. Niinpä Rusty ja hänen transvestiitti ystävänsä ovatkin Waltille alituisen ärsytyksen lähteitä. Eräänä yönä hän kuulee yläkerrasta nujakointia ja päättää puuttua gangstereiden välien selvittelyyn, mutta sankarin roolin haaveileminen loppuu lyhyeen, sillä Walt halvaantuu pahasti ja pystyy vaiv vaivoin kävelemään. Hän menettää myös lähes kokonaan puhekykynsä ja alkaa rypemään itsesäälissä. Vastahakoisesti Walt kuitenkin suostuu kuntoutusohjelmaan, joka sisältää laulutunteja Drag-Rustyltä, se on ainoa keino palauttaa puhekyky. Pian heidän välilleen syntyy hyvin dramaattinen ja outo viha-rakkaussuhde.
