Carl Brasher, Kentuckyläisen vuokraviljelijän poika, ei anna minkään estää itseään. Hän lähtee kotoa löytääkseen paremman elämän. Isä antaa pojalleen yhden neuvon: "Älä luovuta koskaan… ole paras", ja Carl painaa nuo sanat mieleensä.
