Kaunis ja lahjakas mutta äärettömän kova ja itsekeskeinen taiteilija Ingrid Magnussen tulee jätetyksi. Pian Ingridiä syytetään entisen miesystävänsä myrkyttämisestä ja hänet tuomitaan vankilaan. Niin hänen herkässä iässä oleva tyttärensä Astrid joutuu sijaiskotikierteeseen. Astrid yrittää etsiä itseään, kun häntä hyppyytetään mitä erilaisimpien kasvattiäitien luona. Hän kokeilee seksiä, uskontoa, huumeita, kaikkea mitä kuvitella saattaa, mutta hänen oma äitinsä pitää häntä ohjissa rautaisella otteellaan vielä vankilastakin käsin. Askel askeleelta Astrid yrittää tehdä häneen välimatkaa, mutta joutuu lopuksi huomaamaan, ettei katujen kovan koulun jälkeen olekaan niin kaukana viileästä, vaaleasta äidistään. Siinä vaiheessa ei tehtyä saa kuitenkaan enää tekemättömäksi.
