Elokuvan musiikki on etiopialaisen Mulatu Astatken ns. ethiojazzia, ja on herättänyt runsaasti huomiota.Elokuva edustaa Jarmuschin elokuvista eniten perinteistä tyyliä, mutta on kuitenkin gourmettason herkkupala. Pääosaa "Don Johnstonia" esittävä Bill Murray on alkujaan koomikko. Hahmo on ikuinen poikamies, jonka nimi viittaa Miami Vicen tähteen Don Johnsoniin. "Johnston" saa nimettömästi lähetetyn kirjeen, jossa kerrotaan että hänellä on jo aikuisikään ehtinyt poika. "Johnston" lähtee etsimään entisiä naisystäviään löytääksen pojan äidin.

Sukulaiset ja ystävät ovat päättäneet, että Sarah on ollut tarpeeksi kauan yksin ja järjestävät eräänlaisen intervention, jonne jokainen tuo oman ehdotuksensa mahdollisesta seuralaisesta. Sarah ei ole oikein innostunut lähipiirin aktiivisuudesta ja ehdotuksista. Kuitenkin kun sisar menee luomaan profiilin Sarahin puolesta eräälle treffisivustolle, niin Sarah alkaa lämmetä ajatukselle. Siitä sitten seuraa sarja vähemmän onnistuneita tapaamisia, kun kumppaniehdokkaista yllättäen paljastuu vähemmän innostavia piirteitä. Toisaalla taas Jake on saattelemassa avioeroaan päätökseen lakimiesystävänsä avustuksella. Kaveri sitten yrittää etsiä Jakelle pikaisesti seuraa. Niinpä Jake kohtaa Sarahin profiilin. Vaikka ensimmäinen tapaaminen puistossa ei menekään aivan putkeen, niin pari päättää siitä huolimatta yrittää uudelleen. Samoihin aikoihin Sarah alkaa kiinnostua päiväkodissaan olevan pojan isästä.
