Elokuvan tapahtumat sijoittuvat 1988 -1989 väliseen aikaan, aikaan jolloin Neuvostoliiton joukot ovat vetäytymässä pois Afganistanista. Kaksi 18-vuotiasta nuorukaista tapaa toisensa kasarmilla. Molemmat pojat ovat ilmoittautuneet vapaaehtoisiksi "operaatio Afganistaniin" ja molemmilla on omat syynsä. Heidät lähetetään valmennusleirille josta he joutuvat suoraan huonomaineeseen yhdeksänteen divisioonaan, joka on koottu vihaisista ja kurittomista nuorukaisista.
