Tuomaristo päätyi poikkeuksellisesti jakamaan parhaan naisnäyttelijän palkinnon kuuden Volverissa esiintyneen näyttelijättären kesken. Palkinnon saivat Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Chus Lampreave, Yohana Cobo ja Blanca Portillo. Myös elokuvan käsikirjoitus palkittiin. Cruz sai vivahteikkaasta roolitulkinnastaan ensimmäisen Oscar-ehdokkuutensa. Elokuvan keskeisessä kohtauksessa roolihahmon laulun laulaa kuitenkin todellisuudessa flamencotähti Estrella Morente.Ohjaaja Almodóvar palaa elokuvassa perusteemoihinsa. Tarina kertoo salatuista suhteista, isyyksistä, insestistä ja murhista. Niiden vastapainona siinä on myönteistä välittämistä ja auttamista. Juonessa on viittaus ohjaajan elokuvaan Salaisuuteni kukka.
