Silti hänen on vaikea päästää irti työstään, ainoasta identiteetistään. Ystadissa kidnapataan brutaalisti kuuluisa ravintoloitsija, Paolo Salino. Kurt ottaa tapauksen hoitaakseen, mutta hänen on pyydettävä apuja Malmön poliisiosaston kollegaltaan, Jennyltä. Tämä ei kuitenkaan vastaa odotuksiin tai lupauksiin ja pikkuhiljaa Kurtille valkenee mitä Jenny oikeasti tavoittelee. Tutkimukset johtavat suoraan poliisin omiin riveihin. Kurt Wallanderin rikosetsivän uran viimeisen tapauksen ratkaisusta tulee väkivaltainen. Taistelussa vastassa on niin oma sairaus kuin oikeuden voitto korruptoituneen poliisiviranomaisen sisällä. Kurt joutuu kysymään itseltään vielä viimeisen kerran miksi koskaan ryhtyi poliisiksi.

Jäännökset osoittautuvat kuuluvan moldovalaiselle prostituoidulle. Tutkimukset johtavat poliisin venäläisen ihmiskauppiaan jäljille. Mies tekeytyy muotikuvaajaksi ja käyttää nuoria naisia hyväkseen julmin tavoin. Wallander lähtee Moldovaan selvittämään uhrin taustoja ja tapaa tämän hämmentyneen isän ja kaksossisaren. Heidän kertomuksensa Tatianasta on aivan toinen: hän oli onnellinen ja lähetti perheelleen suuria summia rahaa. Ruotsiin palattuaan sekavanoloinen Kurt ajaa kolarin ja Mattson passittaa hänet sairas lomalle pitääkseen tämän sivussa tutkimuksista. Tapausta salassa tutkiva Kurt seuraa johtolankoja traagisten ihmissuhteiden sekamelskaan ja joutuu kyseenalaistamaan onko totuuden kertominen aina oikeutettua.

Skånelainen tuhopolttaja on kärsinyt vankeusrangaistuksensa ja hänet päästetään vapaaksi. Mutta hän ei ole tervetullut pieneen skånelaiseen yhteisöön, ja edes kioskinpitäjä ei suostu myymään hänelle savukkeita. Samana yönä kioski sytytetään tuleen ja omistaja palaa hengiltä. Tuhopolttajaa etsitään jälleen uudesta polttomurhasta. Hämmentynyt Kurt ei kykene erittelemään asioita, joten totuuden sijaan hän keksii selityksiä. Martinsson syyttää häntä valehtelusta eikä kykene luottamaan Kurtiin. Myöhemmin tuhopolttaja löydetään vakavasti pahoinpideltynä ja tajuttomana. Kurt päättää uskoutua Lindalle kertoen olevansa vakavasti sairas ja avun tarpeessa. Kysymys on tukeeko Linda häntä? Hänhän ei ole aina tukenut Lindaa.
