Taikurit J. Daniel Atlas, Merritt McKinney, Henley Reeves ja Jack Wilder astuvat estradille Las Vegasissa taiteilijanimellä "Neljä hevosmiestä". He saavat valtavan yleisön haukkomaan henkeään järjestämällä esiintymislavaltaan käsin pankkiryöstön kaukaisessa Pariisissa. FBI:n etsivä Dylan Rhodes kiehuu raivosta, mutta viranomaisilla ei ole riittävästi todisteita nelikon osuudesta rikokseen, joten heidät on päästettävä vapaaksi. Rhodes jatkaa kuitenkin sinnikkäästi maalitaulujensa tarkkailua ja saa Interpolista avukseen viehättävän ranskalaisen poliisin Alma Drayn. Hevosmiesten perässä laukkaa myös muuan Thaddeus Bradley, joka haluaa osoittaa yliluonnolliset temput silkaksi valheeksi. Hän käy Rhodesin ja Drayn tavoin kilpajuoksua kelloa vastaan.
