Kaupungin katujen alla majailevat pelätyt boksitrollit, jotka tarinoiden mukaan varastelevat kaupunkilaisten kalleimpia asioita: lapsia ja juustoja. Näin kerrotaan, mutta todellisuudessa boksitrollit ovatkin leppoisaa porukkaa. Pienet boksitrollit asuvat maanalaisissa luolissa ja pukeutuvat vanhoihin pahvilaatikoihin, joihin voi tarpeen tullen piiloutua kuin kilpikonna kuoreensa. Ne keräävät kaupunkilaisten pois heittämiä tavaroita ja rakentelevat niistä jännittäviä mekaanisia laitteita. He huolehtivat myös ihmispoika Egusta, joka on kasvanut boksitrollien keskuudessa pienestä asti. Kun ilkeä tuholaistorjuja Sieppo alkaa jahdata boksitrolleja päästäkseen juustoseurapiireihin, boksitrollit ovat pulassa. Rohkean Winnie-tytön avulla Egun on saatava apua maanalaiselle perheelleen. Myös boksitrollien on rohkaistuttava ja osoitettava, että heistä löytyy särmää.
