Nuori Kristiina joutui kruununperijäksi jo kuusivuotiaana isänsä kuollessa ja Ruotsin hallitsija hänestä tuli 18-vuotiaana. Kristiina omasi ikäisekseen poikkeuksellista viisautta ja halua muutokseen. Hän myös rikkoi vahvasti aikansa naiskäsitystä – hän mm. miekkaili, metsästi karhuja ja pukeutui usein housuihin – ja ajautui väistämättä yhteenottoihin hovin konservatiivisten luterilaisten aatelismiehien kanssa. Hovi näki kuningattaren tärkeimpänä tehtävä naimisiinmenon ja perillisen, pojan, synnyttämisen. Kristiinalla oli kuitenkin korkeammat tavoitteet, hän halusi tarjota alamaisilleen koulutusta, vaalia tieteitä ja lopettaa kolmekymmenvuotisen sodan protestanttien ja katolisten välillä. Kristiinan rakkaus hovineitoaan, kaunista Ebba Sparrea kohtaan, hankaloitti entisestään hänen asemaansa.

Kun häneltä löydetään räjäyttimiä ja kartta iskupaikasta, hänet lähetetään valtakunnan rikospoliisin päällikön Arthur Neben ja Gestapon johtajan Heinrich Müllerin kuulusteltavaksi. Heiltä Elser kuulee yrityksensä epäonnistuneen: mies, jonka hän halusi tappaa lopettaakseen juuri alkaneen maailmansodan verenvuodatuksen, poistui paikalta vain 13 minuuttia ennen räjähdystä.
