Avioerosta toipuvan Rachelin elämä on alkoholinhuuruista sumua ja riipivää yksinäisyyttä. Aina ei ollut näin. Pari vuotta sitten Rachelilla oli rakastava aviomies, kaunis talo ja työ. Murhe ja alkoholi veivät kaiken. Nyt Rachel viettää päivänsä matkaamalla junalla aamuin illoin lähiöstä New York Cityyn ja takaisin, viinaa juomapullostaan siemaillen, luullen huijaavansa ihmisiä ympärillään. Junan ikkunasta tuijottaessaan Rachel pakenee kuvitelmiinsa. Kiskot kulkevat hänen vanhojen kotikulmiensa vierestä. Välttääkseen näkemästä entistä kotiaan Rachel seuraa läheisen talon nuoren parin elämää kuvitellen heille täydellisen onnen. Kunnes eräänä päivänä Rachel näkee junasta jotain, joka voi tuhota tuon onnen. Kun Rachel kuulee tarkkailemansa naisen kadonneen, hän yrittää tuskaisesti muistaa, mitä todella on tapahtunut, mitä hän on nähnyt - ja tehnyt.
