Jaken saapuminen tietysti ravistelee lasten vakiintunutta yhteisöä ja tietysti asettaa heidät vaaraan, kun pahat eriskummalliset käyttävät poikaa hyväkseen kätketyt lapset löytääkseen. Disney esittää sydäntälämmittävän seikkailukomedian, joka sijoittuu moderniin nisäkkäiden suurkaupunki Zootropolikseen. Sen vieressä sijaitsevat elinympäristöt ovat esimerkiksi rutikuiva Saharan aukio ja hyytävän kylmä Tundrakylä, joten se on sulatusuuni, jossa jokaisesta elinympäristöstä tulleita eläimiä elää yhdessä. Siellä ei ole väliä mikä on, sillä suurimmasta norsusta pienimpään päästäiseen jokainen voi olla mitä tahansa. Kun optimistinen konstaapeli Judy Hopps saapuu, hän saa huomata, että ensimmäisenä kanina suurten, kovien eläinten täyttämissä poliisivoimissa ei ole kovin helppoa. Teknisesti taiturimainen elokuva on suurelta osin tehty tietokoneella, mitä ei yllättävää kyllä kovin helpolla huomaa lopputuloksesta. Miljööt on luotu kokonaan tietokoneilla ja eläimet ovat perinteisten tehosteiden ja digitehosteiden saumatonta yhteispeliä.
