Elokuva kertoo mandoliinia soittavasta italialaisesta kapteenista Antonio Corellista ja voimakastahtoisesta kreikattaresta Pelagiasta. Tapahtumien näyttämönä on Kefalonian saari Kreikassa Toisen Maailmansodan aikana. Kun Corelli ja hänen komppaniansa ovat miehittäneet saaren, he alkavat nauttia olostaan kuin lomalaiset. Heillä on mielessään vain viini, laulu ja naiset. Aluksi Pelagia ja kyläläiset inhoavat kutsumattomia vieraita, mutta italialaisten charmi ja elämänilo murtavat jään kansallisuuksien väliltä. Pelagia oppii pian näkemään Corellin todellisen luonteen.
