Lontoo vuonna 1940. Valtakunnan synkistellessä sodan kynsissä, moraalia pyritään vahvistamaan propagandaelokuvilla. Ministeriö ymmärtää hakea elokuviinsa ’naisen kosketusta’, ja palkkaa Catrin Colen käsikirjoittamaan naisroolien dialogit. Vaikkakin Catrinin taiteilijamies vähättelee hänen työtään, Catrinin synnynnäinen sähäkkyys saa välittömästi kyynisen, mutta nokkelan pääkäsikirjoittaja Buckleyn huomion. Yhdessä he ryhtyvät työstämään epookkielokuvaa Dunkerquen pelastajasta, pääroolissaan suurenmoisen huomionkipeä entinen matineatähti Ambrose Hilliard.
