Mark Watney on mukana astronauttien ryhmässä, joka on Marsissa suorittamassa Nasan Ares III -tehtävää. Avaruusmyrskyssä Watney eksyy ja hänen luullaan kuolleen. Kun ruokaa on vain kuukaudeksi ja pelastajia täytyy odotella kenties vuosia, niin Watney joutuu miettimään luovia ratkaisuja turvatakseen ravinnonsaantinsa. Onneksi hänellä on kasvitieteilijän koulutus. Marsin pinnalla minkään ei pitäisi kasvaa, mutta neuvokas Watney rakentaa eräänlaisen kasvihuoneen, jossa hän yrittää kasvattaa perunaa. Ravinnonsaanti näyttää ratkeavan ainakin hetkeksi, mutta varsinainen ongelma on isompi. Watney on edelleen jumissa Marsissa, mutta luottaa kekseliäisyyteensä löytääkseen keinon viestittää Maahan olevansa elossa. Lopulta hänet huomataan Maassa ja NASAn kansainvälinen tiimi tiedemiehiä alkaa tekemään väsymättä töitä tuodakseen tämän yksinäisen ”marsilaisen” kotiin.

Reitti kulkee vuoren pahamaiseista pohjoisrinnettä pitkin, eikä kukaan ole onnistunut sen valloituksessa aikaisemmin. Saksalaiset Toni Kurz ja Andreas Hinterstoisser ovat harrastaneet vuorikiipeilyä jo pienestä pitäen. He pyöräilevät 700 kilometrin matkan Sveitsiin, jossa Eigerin komea, yli 3 970 metrin korkeuteen yltävä vuori sijaitsee. Heidän tehtävänsä ei tule olemaan helppo, sillä helvetillinen kylmyys, ankara kiipeämisurakka ja korkeus saattavat pahimmassa tapauksessa viedä miehiltä hengen.
