Pienessä ruotsalaisessa kylässä 1940-luvulla vietetään joulua. Tarina kertoo nuoresta Karl-Bertil Jonssonista, jonka tulevaisuus on ennalta määrätty hänen isänsä, tavaratalon johtajan, toimesta. Nuoren miehen esikuva on Robin Hood, ja hän uneksiikin elämästä hyväntekijänä sen sijaan, että sukeltaisi liiketoimintalaskelmien maailmaan.
