13-vuotias Henry Wheeler yrittää pitää huolta kotiin eristäytyneestä Adele äidistään omien teini-iän kasvukipujensa puristuksissa. Eräällä kauppareissulla Henry ja hänen äitinsä tapaavat Frank Chambersin, samaan aikaan uhkaavan ja toisaalta avun tarpeessa olevan miehen, joka onnistuu pääsemään heidän mukanaan kotiin asti. Adelelle ja Henrylle selviää, että Frank on juuri karannut vankilasta ja haavoittunut pakomatkallaan. Pitkän viikonlopun aikana ehtii tapahtua paljon, poliisin etsiessä murhaajaa Adele ja Henry oppivat miehestä lempeämmän totuuden ja pian omaksuvat hänet osaksi perhettään.
