Kaliforniassa San Pedron satamassa laivalla kuolee 27 miestä. Yksi henkihieverissä selvinnyt toistelee kauhuissaan nimeä Keyser Soze. Kuusi viikkoa myöhemmin viisi rikollista seisoo poliisin tunnistusrivissä. Poliisi yrittää onkia heiltä tietoja, mutta kukaan ei myönnä mitään. Odotellessaan vapautumistaan yksi miehistä, McManus, ehdottaa muille keikkaa. Keaton, joka vakuuttaa ryhtyneensä lainkuuliaiseksi, ei ole kiinnostunut, mutta suostuu lopulta ystävänsä Kintin pyynnöstä mukaan.
