Eletään vuotta 1937. Japanin armeija on juuri hyökännyt Kiinan eteläiseen pääkaupunkiin Nankingiin ja verilöyly on kaupungissa täydessä vauhdissa. Amerikkalainen hautausurakoitsija John Miller on saanut tehtäväkseen valmistella paikallisen katolisen kirkon papin haudan lepoon ja nyt tuo kirkko osoittautuu tuomiopäivän tunnelman valtaaman kaupungin viimeiseksi koskemattomaksi linnakkeeksi.
