Mosca, 1939. Ivan è un giovane proiezionista che lavora al club del Kgb. La sera stessa del suo matrimonio con Anastasia viene portato via segretamente: il suo nuovo incarico sarà quello di proiettare film nientemeno che a Stalin. Ivan si applica con scrupolo al lavoro e non può tollerare che Anastasia vada di nascosto a visitare in orfanatrofio la piccola Katya, figlia dei vicini ebrei arrestati. Dopo l'invasione tedesca, Ivan e Anastasia devono seguire Beria, il capo del Kgb, verso gli Urali; questi rimanda poi a Mosca il proiezionista, trattenendo la donna. Quando Anastasia torna a Mosca, è incinta; si ucciderà, lasciando un messaggio per Katya.
