Cuando, en 1996, Ry Cooder viajó a Cuba para grabar un álbum con Ibrahim Ferrer y los músicos que habían colaborado en el disco Buena Vista Social Club (en Cuba conocidos como los superabuelos), Wenders lo siguió: observó a los músicos en el estudio y rastreó sus vidas en La Habana.
