La cinta nos traslada a una isla en el Mar Báltico en el verano de 1939. A sus 13 años, Karl ha ido a trabajar allí como asistente de Hasselbond, el maestro del faro. Hasselbond rechaza al principio al niño por ser tan joven pero Karl, que ha crecido en un orfanato, lucha desesperadamente por el puesto aprovechando todas las oportunidades que tiene para demostrar que puede trabajar en ese oficio. Finalmente, Hasselbond lo acepta. Sin embargo, el hijo de Hasselbond empezará a odiar al muchacho al ver como poco a poco comienza a granjearse la confianza y el cariño de su padre.
