Un joven y ambicioso funcionario Jussi se encuentra a cargo de la licencia ambiental de una enorme mina de níquel y uranio en el norte de Finlandia. La mina Talvivaara introduce un nuevo método de recolección de minerales, a la vez implica la creación de puestos de trabajo en una de las zonas más pobres de la región. Jussi descubre poco a poco que está siendo llevado por mal camino y que el nuevo método tiene graves inconvenientes no previstos.
