Omdat hij naar eigen zeggen geen enkele acteur kon vinden die een komische versie van Adolf Hitler wilde spelen, deed regisseur Taika Waititi het maar zelf. Hij is het denkbeeldige vriendje van een tienjarige jongen die lid is van de Hitler-Jugend, maar vooral een watje is. Tot ergernis van Der Führer die als een sluwe vos de jongen probeert te manipuleren. Met hilarische en pijnlijke momenten tot gevolg. Jojo Rabbit is een wrange komedie die vaak schuurt en soms uit de bocht vliegt. Geen enkel facet van het nazitijdperk wordt onder het tapijt geveegd. Jojo ziet met eigen ogen hoe tegenstanders van het regime worden opgehangen. Zijn moeder (een formidabele rol van Scarlett Johansson) zit in het verzet, herbergt een jong Joods meisje als onderduiker, maar laat haar zoon zelf ontdekken hoe deze wereld in elkaar zit.
