Jojo Rabbit is een wrange komedie die vaak schuurt en soms uit de bocht vliegt. Geen enkel facet van het nazitijdperk wordt onder het tapijt geveegd. Jojo ziet met eigen ogen hoe tegenstanders van het regime worden opgehangen. Zijn moeder (een formidabele rol van Scarlett Johansson) zit in het verzet, herbergt een jong Joods meisje als onderduiker, maar laat haar zoon zelf ontdekken hoe deze wereld in elkaar zit.
