In Führer und Verführer wordt ingezoomd op het werk van Adolf Hitlers propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels. Zijn opruiende propaganda heeft er mede voor gezorgd dat miljoenen mensen de dood in werden gejaagd, waaronder zes miljoen vermoorde joden. Vanaf de zogenaamde Anschluss (annexatie) van Oostenrijk in maart 1938 doet de krachtige propagandamachine van Joseph Goebbels zijn werk. Het beleid van de nationaalsocialisten vindt op ongekend niveau bijval. Als duidelijk wordt dat Hitler vastbesloten is Europa in een barbaarse oorlog te verwikkelen, ziet Goebbels zich gedwongen zijn strategie – tot dan gericht op veiligheid – te veranderen. Hij wil niet uit de gratie te raken bij de dictator die hij verafgoodt en richt zich op het radicaliseren van de aanhang en het misleiden van het Duitse volk met onder meer antisemitische films zoals ‘De Eeuwige Jood’. Tot aan de ondergang van Nazi-Duitsland in mei 1945, blijft Goebbels wanhopig vechten voor het imago van het fascisme.

Berlin in June of 1940. While Nazi propaganda celebrates the regime’s victory over France, a kitchen-cum-living room in Prenzlauer Berg is filled with grief. Anna and Otto Quangel’s son has been killed at the front. This working class couple had long believed in the ‘Führer’ and followed him willingly, but now they realise that his promises are nothing but lies and deceit. They begin writing postcards as a form of resistance and in a bid to raise awareness: Stop the war machine! Kill Hitler! David Kinsella, funded by the Norwegian Film Institute, arrived in North Korea ready to make a documentary about a young poet at the invitation of the North Korean government, but filming hadn’t gotten very far when Kinsella realized that everything he was filming was fiction not fact, even the young poet. Each day the government brought in extras and staged every scene too essentially create a propaganda film for the country. Not to be deterred Kinsella took the manipulation of his work in stride and started to capture large expanses of industrial areas to alter later with animation and create an amazing film.
