In Afrika wordt de jonge leeuw Simba geboren als zoon van de leeuwenkoning Mufasa. Dat zint Mufasa's jaloerse broer Scar absoluut niet, die nu niet langer de eerste troonopvolger is. Terwijl Simba een onbezorgde jeugd geniet in zijn vaders koninkrijk, smeedt Scar samen met een groep hyena's een plan om zowel Mufasa als Simba uit de weg te ruimen, en zo zelf de macht te kunnen grijpen.

Rafiki geeft de legende van Mufasa door aan leeuwenwelp Kiara, dochter van Simba en Nala, waarbij Timon en Pumbaa hun kenmerkende schtick lenen. Verteld in flashbacks, introduceert het verhaal Mufasa als een weeswelp, verloren en alleen totdat hij een sympathieke leeuw genaamd Taka ontmoet - de erfgenaam van een koninklijke bloedlijn. De toevallige ontmoeting zet een reis in gang van buitenbeentjes die op zoek zijn naar hun lot en samenwerken om een dreigende en dodelijke vijand te ontwijken.

Lang geleden was er in het Trotse Land de traditie van De Leeuwenwacht. De tweede welp van de Koning moet de sterkste en dapperste dieren zoeken om samen de Kringloop van het Leven te beschermen. Kion is de tweede welp van Koning Simba en Nala en volgens Rafiki is het voorbestemd dat hij de nieuwe leider van De Leeuwenwacht wordt. Maar in plaats van allemaal leeuwen te kiezen voor deze beschermers, kiest Kion zijn vrienden! Maar is zijn vader het eens is met de keuze van zijn zoon?
