Op een boot, midden op zee, leven een 60-jarige man en een 16-jarig meisje. Hij houdt haar verborgen voor de bewoonde wereld en is van plan met haar in het huwelijk te treden als ze 17 wordt. De vissers die nu en dan hun hobby uitoefenen op de boot mogen het meisje nauwelijks benaderen, want de man waakt angstvallig over haar veiligheid en haalt zijn boog tevoorschijn zodra iemand met haar in contact tracht te komen. Wanneer een jonge visser die de boot bezoekt het hart van het meisje weet te raken, is dat niet naar de zin van de oude man, die zijn kansen om met haar te huwen teniet ziet gaan.
