Alleenstaande moeder Sonja is adjunct directeur van een dierentuin. Haar dochter Hanna groeit op in de dierentuin, waar ze vooral heel erg gek is op de pinguïns. Als Hanna bevriend raakt met Tom, zoon van de knappe architect Mark, wordt de moeder van Sonja sinds lange tijd weer verliefd… op de vader van Tom. Maar hun relatie komt meteen al onder druk te staan, want Mark werkt aan een prestigieus project: een modern winkelcentrum dat het einde van de dierentuin én van de pinguïns zal betekenen. Daartegenover vecht Sonja voor het voortbestaan van de dierentuin. Ondanks hun verschillen, zijn ze toch erg gek op elkaar. Totdat Sonja erachter komt dat ze gesaboteerd wordt. Zal Mark hierachter zitten? Als Hanna en Tom erachter komen dat de pinguïns moeten worden afgemaakt, komen met ze een plan om hen te redden. Ondertussen beseffen zowel Sonja als Mark dat ze grote fouten hebben gemaakt en bundelen ze hun krachten om de dierentuin te redden.
