Det sovjetiske statspolitiet, NKVD, gir ham en ny identitet, arbeid på et gårdskollektiv, og en ny kone. Sammen med frivillige som har kommet til Karelen fra Amerika bygger Jussi et arbeiderparadis. Stalins utrenskninger forvandler paradiset til et helvete, der Jussi heller vil bli skutt enn leve, men han får ikke lov å dø. Jussi Ketola ser og opplever ting som ingen vil tro er sanne - men det er de.
