One day waves bring a wooden statue of Lenin to a small town by the Black Sea. The statue is erected in the town square by the Municipality with the hope that it would attract tourists to the town. As an official opening ceremony is planned with the participation of the Prime Minister and a Russian delegation, the statue gets stolen. Dwaj zaprawieni w bojach podoficerowie amerykańskiej marynarki wojennej, Buddusky (Nicholson) i Mulhall (Otis Young), eskortują młodego marynarza Meadowsa (Randy Quaid) z bazy wojskowej w Wirginii do New Hampshire, gdzie odsiadywać on będzie wyrok ośmiu lat więzienia za drobne wykroczenie. Buddusky i Mulhall biorą Meadowsa pod swoje skrzydła i postanawiają dać mu prawdziwą szkołę życia. Ich eskapada rozpoczyna się w Waszyngtonie, gdzie cudem unikają bójki w barze i upijają się do nieprzytomności w pokoju hotelowym. W Nowym Jorku zadzierają z kilkoma marines, a w Bostonie Buddusky zabiera Meadowsa do domu publicznego, gdzie ten przeżywa inicjację seksualną. W końcu Buddusky i Mulhall niechętnie odstawiają Meadowsa do więzienia uświadamiając sobie, że życie na wolności niewiele się różni od życia za kratkami.
