Kiedy odwiedza go młodszy artysta Nicolas z przyjaciółką Marianne (Emmanuelle Béart), Frenhofer pod ich wpływem postanawia wznowić prace nad dawnym, niedokończonym dziełem: obrazem "La Belle Noiseuse" ("Piękna złośnica"). Warunek jest jeden - do aktu, rozpoczętego kiedyś z udziałem młodej Liz, pozować ma teraz piękna Marianne. Frenhofer utracił niegdyś przy malowaniu tego dzieła wenę twórczą oraz oddalił się emocjonalnie od żony. Czy odzyska entuzjazm pod wpływem młodszej modelki?
