Imam Hasan, his wife Hacer and his daughter Fatma arrive at Karaağaçlı, a small railway town in the middle of the Anatolian wilderness. Besides carrying out the duties of the imam, Hasan will be teaching religion to the children of the town during the holy month of Ramadan. His unusual behavior towards his wife and little daughter arrests the attention of the townsfolk. Meanwhile Adem, the son of the stationmaster who is crazy for trains begins to learn about and get into a world he has never heard of before in the lessons given by Hasan: trains, sin, good deeds, heaven and hell.. everything gets jumbled. Condemned of being harsh and merciless towards his family, Hasan one day finds himself obliged to reveal the "secret" about himself and his family and this changes everything in the eyes of people. Yet there has remained another secret of which anyone, even Hasan is hardly aware. The people of the town, including Adem, will remember this Ramadan throughout their lives.

Ara is the story of four people and an empty house. They are stuck in the "space between". The whole action takes place in an almost empty flat which is belong to one of the characters. The camera goes out only once. But various other visuals from commercials, TV series' that has been shot in the same flat, sneak into the film. Spanning around 10 years, the story is told between intervals of these visuals. Turkey has been through a huge change in the last 20-30 years. The modest country of the recent past is a faded memory compared to the consumerist life style of modern day. It is the time of ambitious people who can do anything to "live well", to "break through". This is the story of a small group of people who manage to "live well" but can't help getting lost in a spiritual vacuum.

Elif and her sisters Funda and Aysun have spent much of their adult life coming to terms with a traumatic childhood in which their parents were killed during a bus accident that left the siblings terrified but physically unhurt. In time Funda and Aysun became mentally ill, and it fell to Elif to care for them, but eventually the burden became more than Elif and her husband could bear, and they deserted the siblings, leaving them to an unknown fate. Living in a country with no social safety net, Funda and Aysun fall prey to violence and exploitation, and their reunion with Elif and Yasemin is both poignant and troubling.
