The performances at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida during the North American leg of The MDNA Tour were documented for video release. Madonna described the tour as "the journey of a soul from darkness to light". The tour was a commercial success although it courted a number of controversies. It was dubbed as the highest-grossing tour of 2012 by Billboard. Ihre ganze Jugend trägt sie fortan nur noch seine Klamotten, hört und spielt seine Musik. Trauer und Wut werden mit Songs von bekannten Metalbands und mit eigenen Heavy-Metal-Riffs ausgedrückt. Auch nach der Schulzeit fühlt sie sich von allen missverstanden – auch von ihren Eltern. Diese versuchen durch den Kirchenchor wieder ein wenig am Leben teilzunehmen. Gerade als Heras Rebellion immer destruktivere Ausmaße annimmt, zieht ein junger Priester in den Ort. Das Schicksal scheint sich zu wenden und Hera erkennt, dass sie nicht ihr ganzes Leben lang weglaufen kann.

Produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the special was an adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical The Sound of Music, starring country singer Carrie Underwood as Maria von Trapp, performed and televised live from Grumman Studios in Bethpage, New York. Meron felt that if the telecast were successful, the concept could become "another kind of entertainment that can exist on TV."
