The adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne and Garth. From Wayne's basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called "Wayne's World" on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive who wants to produce a big-budget version of "Wayne's World"—and he also wants Wayne's girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra. Wayne and Garth have to battle the executive not only to save their show, but also Cassandra.

John Cox führte 1977 in London bei einer verschwenderisch ausgestatteten Produktion die Regie im Bühnenbild von Julia Trevelyan Oman. Diese Inszenierung bot am Sylvesterabend 1990 das luxuriöse Ambiente für den Abschied von Joan Sutherland von ihrem Londoner Publikum, das die Sängerin seit ihren ersten großen Erfolgen an diesem renommierten Opernhaus in den fünfziger Jahren verehrte. Das rauschende Fest im zweiten Aufzug der Fledermaus erreichte seinen Höhepunkt durch ihren stürmisch umjubelten Auftritt und der Verpflichtung ihrer Freunde und Kollegen Luciano Pavarotti und Marilyn Horne, mit denen sie häufig zusammen auf der Bühne gestanden hat.

Am Ende nimmt sie am großen Ball der adligen Familie Gherardeschi teil und stellt fest, dass Mizio ein echter Prinz ist, vor dem sie flüchtet und ihren silbernen Schuh hinterlässt, bevor es zum Happy End kommt.
