Pendant les mois qui ont précédé l’élection, Waldheim, pressé par le Congrès juif mondial de se retirer de la course, est passé du statut de dignitaire respecté à celui de « menteur » et de « nazi ». Et pourtant… il a tout de même réussi à remporter la présidence.
