Sardari Begum is a 1996 Hindi movie directed by Shyam Benegal. The film stars Kiron Kher, Amrish Puri, Rajit Kapur and Rajeshwari Sachdev. The film's lead actress Kiron Kher won the 1997 National Film Award - Special Jury Award. Rajeshwari Sachdev won the 1997 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. The music by Vanraj Bhatia also received wide acclaim. Arati Ankalikar-Tikekar, the play back singer of the film also received accolades in the category of 'Best Playback Singer'. This film focuses on the complex portrait of family relationships, generational and sexual politics as well as social mores in India.

The basic story of a young criminal not quite living up to his won ideals of "not to give a damn" sidesteps out of his criminal career while dragging his younger brother into it, could have been interesting. Unfortunately the implementation is simply not good enough. As so often with Danish movies, there is little appreciation for detail thus leaving us with hoodlums talking like they've done time at a business academy rather than a prison. Dialects completely out of here and idiosyncratic bikers without bikes or even character for that matter. An ever accelerating surrealism towards the end doesn't help to clear the slow pace of this film but it does give a glimpse of what the story could have unfolded to become.

Flamboyant, dashing and handsome, Kumar, is the proud father of Ravi, his only son, and his pride and joy. When Ravi grows up, he meets with Komal, both fall in love with each other and would like to get married. Ravi mentions this to his dad, who initially approves, but later relents when he finds out who Komal's dad is. Ravi is dismayed as his dad has never refused him anything. Ravi sets out to discover what the reason(s) are behind his dad's refusal to accept Komal as his daughter-in-law, a decision which will not only endanger his life, but also create a rift between father and son.
