The Okanagan Valley in the southern interior of British Columbia is marketed as a destination of leisure, recreation, retirement and wealth. Behind this facade is a largely invisible agricultural labour force, comprised of temporary migrant workers from the Global South. These workers are placed in a system that is inherently precarious and potentially exploitative, wherein their legal status is tied directly to their employer, with no path to permanent citizenship. While the workers pay into Canadian health care and pension plans, they do not benefit from these social goods as temporary citizens. This film aims to make this labour visible, while contemplating the prescribed aesthetics imposed on the landscape within the region. Formally, the film resides at the intersection of photography and the moving image, while embracing the generative structural limitations of early cinema.

While emptying the Parisian apartment of her mother Kyoko, who has just died, Akiko discovers a pile of notebooks specifically left for her. The notebooks are her mother's personal diary, which she started writing in 1964. Laden with the strange inheritance, Akiko decides to take her mother's urn back to Japan to her maternal family, and in the process discovers that she is herself part of an intimate area of her mother's life about which she new nothing. The film travels between two generations of women, from the France of the New Wave to Japan after the atomic bomb. While looking for the right place to disperse her mother's ashes, Akiko goes back in time and tries to find her own place. Akiko, the heroine of this documentary, refers to her mother the actress and her mother the feminine icon of the 1960s. The film is carried along by this dialog beyond death, just as it is by Kyoko's past and Akiko's destiny.

Images of ruin and destruction from places that only recently were the scenes of fighting are transformed into a tragicomic parable of survival in a provisional space-time. Looting is a daily occurrence, and going out in search of booty becomes a boyish adventure during which the participants explore places only recently inhabited by private individuals. And when all this is recorded by a Polish television crew headed by a canny female reporter, an existential satire is born. The war is there, but somewhere around the corner.
