Companys, ensorrat, espera la mort convençut que aquest judici serà una fal·làcia i la seva condemna, un mer tràmit. Però l'advocat i capità d'artilleria Ramon de Colubí, franquista convençut a qui assignen la defensa, intenta que la paraula justícia no sigui només un eslògan del règim buit de contingut, i fa tot el que està a les seves mans per salvar Companys, malgrat les diferències ideològiques que els separen i l'odi que li professa. Mentrestant, el règim fa tot el que pot per amagar el procés, jutjar a corre-cuita Companys i afusellar-lo sense fer gaire soroll, per evitar que esdevingui un màrtir i un símbol per Catalunya.
