Jun-shikille tästä unelmasta tulee Korean poliittisen vapauden symboli, Tatsuo puolestaan haluaa osoittaa juoksumenestyksellään japanilaisen kansallismielisyyden voiman. Erilaiset perhetaustat ja kansallisuus tekevät kilpakumppaneista toistensa vastustajia. Sodan syttyessä molemmat nuorukaiset kutsutaan armeijaan, mikä tarjoaa toiselle aseman keisarillisena upseerina ja toiselle hyljeksityn korealaisnostoväen rivisotilaana. Heidän tiensä kohtaavat uudelleen sotatantereella, jonne myös Jun-shik on joutunut japanilaisten pakottamana.
