Onneksi hänellä on kasvitieteilijän koulutus. Marsin pinnalla minkään ei pitäisi kasvaa, mutta neuvokas Watney rakentaa eräänlaisen kasvihuoneen, jossa hän yrittää kasvattaa perunaa. Ravinnonsaanti näyttää ratkeavan ainakin hetkeksi, mutta varsinainen ongelma on isompi. Watney on edelleen jumissa Marsissa, mutta luottaa kekseliäisyyteensä löytääkseen keinon viestittää Maahan olevansa elossa.
