Hikotusta odottaa kuitenkin vastuullinen haaste. Hänestä pitäisi tulla isänsä, viikinkipäällikkö Stoickin työn jatkaja. Hikotus ja Hampaaton kohtaavat lohikäärmeenpyytäjä Eretin, joka varustaa armeijaa miehelle nimeltä Drago. Siinä missä Hikotus ja hänen kylänsä asukkaat ovat rakentaneet molemminpuolisen kunnioituksen ja yhteistyösuhteen ihmisten ja lohikäärmeen välille, Drago pitää lohikäärmeitä villieläiminä, jotka eivät tarvitse inhimillistä kohtelua. Ne keräävät kaupunkilaisten pois heittämiä tavaroita ja rakentelevat niistä jännittäviä mekaanisia laitteita. He huolehtivat myös ihmispoika Egusta, joka on kasvanut boksitrollien keskuudessa pienestä asti. Kun ilkeä tuholaistorjuja Sieppo alkaa jahdata boksitrolleja päästäkseen juustoseurapiireihin, boksitrollit ovat pulassa. Rohkean Winnie-tytön avulla Egun on saatava apua maanalaiselle perheelleen. Myös boksitrollien on rohkaistuttava ja osoitettava, että heistä löytyy särmää.
