Hovi näki kuningattaren tärkeimpänä tehtävä naimisiinmenon ja perillisen, pojan, synnyttämisen. Kristiinalla oli kuitenkin korkeammat tavoitteet, hän halusi tarjota alamaisilleen koulutusta, vaalia tieteitä ja lopettaa kolmekymmenvuotisen sodan protestanttien ja katolisten välillä. Kristiinan rakkaus hovineitoaan, kaunista Ebba Sparrea kohtaan, hankaloitti entisestään hänen asemaansa.
