Huono päätös johtaa lopulta vielä huonompiin ratkaisuihin. Siviilejä kuolee, komppanianjohtajaa syytetään sotarikoksesta. Kotona odottavan perheen tunnelmat ovat alakuloiset. Isän saapuessa kotiin, piinaavat syyllisyyden muistot antavat perheelle uuden vaikean vastustajan - isää uhkaa vuosien vankeus. Syyttäjällä on on omat ennakkoasenteet syytettyä kohtaan ja oikeudenkäynti menee henkilökohtaiseksi pätemiseksi ja arvovaltataisteluksi. Onko parempi jopa valehdella, perheen yhtenäisyyden nimissä.

Vuonna 1944 virolaiset olivat joutuneet suurvaltapolitiikan välikappaleiksi ja kävi miten kävi, virolaiset kansakuntana häviäsivät.
