Vuoden 1942 miehitetyssä Ranskassa SS-sotilaat pidättävät Gillesin ja lähettävät hänet kohti tuhoamisleiriä. Matkalla Gilles välttyy täpärästi teloitukselta väittämällä, ettei ole oikeasti juutalainen vaan persialainen. Hätävalhe pelastaa Gillesin hengen, mutta johdattaa hänet pian entistä pahempaan pulaan.
