Koskettava rakkaustarina joka pohjautuu Lili Elben ja Gerda Wegenerin elämäntarinaan. Vuoden 1926 Kööpenhaminassa elävä taiteilija Einar Wegener, joka on naimisissa Gerda Wegenerin kanssa, tunnetaan maisemamaalauksistaan. Myös Gerda on taiteilija, vähemmän tunnettu, mutta työllistyy merkkihenkilöiden muotokuvamaalarina. Heidän avioliittonsa on vahva ja täynnä rakkautta. Kaikki muuttuu, kun Gerda pyytää miestään asettumaan malliksi ja pukeutumaan naisen asuun viimeistelläkseen maalauksensa. Kokemus mullistaa pariskunnan koko elämän. Einar huomaa, että ollessaan Lili hän kykenee toteuttamaan itseään aidoimmillaan ja ryhtyy elämään naisena. Gerda taas löytää Lilistä uuden muusan ja kypsyy taiteilijana uuteen kukoistukseen. Pariskunta joutuu kohtaamaan myös ympäröivän yhteiskunnan ennakkoluulot. He lähtevät kotimaastaan avomielisempään Pariisiin. Yhä uudelleen Gerda osoittaa tukensa Lilille, joka tekee hänestä yhden maailman ensimmäisistä sukupuolenkorjauksen pioneereista.

Isän saapuessa kotiin, piinaavat syyllisyyden muistot antavat perheelle uuden vaikean vastustajan - isää uhkaa vuosien vankeus. Syyttäjällä on on omat ennakkoasenteet syytettyä kohtaan ja oikeudenkäynti menee henkilökohtaiseksi pätemiseksi ja arvovaltataisteluksi. Onko parempi jopa valehdella, perheen yhtenäisyyden nimissä.
